Top 7 Shocking Facts about Skin Cancer

1. More than 90% of skin cancer is caused by exposure to UV rays produced by the sun and are responsible for non-melanoma skin cancers. Exposure to these rays can come from being outdoors, tanning booths and even through automobile or home windows.

2. One person will die every hour from skin cancer. About 8,000 people will die of melanoma in the U.S. this year. Many of these deaths could have been prevented by simply protecting one's self from the sun.

3. Although the risk factor is rather low, skin cancer can be the most deadly for African Americans, Asians and Latinos.

4. The American Cancer Society estimates that 1.5 million cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed this year.

5. Although one in five Americans will be diagnosed in their lifetime with skin cancer, the risk factor is higher for Caucasians, with it being one in three.

6. Protecting children against UV exposure is essential for skin health into adulthood. A blistering sun burn during childhood increases the risk of melanoma as an adult.

7. According to the American Cancer Society, men are twice as likely to develop skin cancer over women. In fact, it is more common than prostate cancer, lung cancer and colon cancer in men over 50. This makes skin cancer the most common cancer in men over 50.

Ninety percent of your wrinkles are caused by the sun's ultraviolet (UV) light. It used to be that women concerned about their appearance took great pains to protect their skin from the sun with parasols, gloves and wide-brimmed hats. However, after Coco Chanel returned from her Mediterranean vacation as a "bronzed bombshell" in the 1920's, tanning has become one of the hottest fashion accessories.

Fake tanning has evolved and gotten rid of the usual 'orange' look and bad smell. Some favorites at PureBeauty are Tan Towels ($2.95 and up), DDF Enhancing Sun Protection SPF 30 ($30.95) and California Tan ($18 and up) products to even out 'blotchy' patches, calm redness and provide UV protection.
